Labiaplasty is a procedure to reshape long, large or droopy labia minora, which are the folds of skin surrounding the vagina. While some patients desire surgery to correct changes in their body resulting from childbirth, aging or menopause, many candidates are young adults that have not had children yet and simply feel uncomfortable in their bodies.
In this post, Dr. Jill Hazen discusses some of the common reasons why women pursue labiaplasty, and explains how the procedure can benefit patients physically and mentally.
Boost Confidence
One of the most common reasons why women have labiaplasty surgery is because they feel self-conscious or embarrassed by the size or shape of their labia. The lack of confidence can often lead to feelings of depression or anxiety, too. Removing excess tissue and reshaping the labia to improve its appearance helps women feel more confident and comfortable with themselves.
Wear Tight-Fitting Clothing
Women with enlarged or prominent labia occasionally find that this area looks very visible when wearing yoga pants, bathing suits and other tight-fitting clothing. A common concern is that the labial tissue can slip out of thongs or underwear. Eliminating the extra tissue enables patients to wear whatever clothing they like, including tight or skimpy styles, without calling attention to the groin area.
Alleviate Personal Discomfort
Oversized, long or prominent labia can feel physically uncomfortable for a woman, as the skin sometimes tugs on clothing, sticks to the inner thighs when not being held in underwear, becomes twisted, chafes or, in the worst cases, even bleeds.
Trimming and tightening the labial tissues markedly improves personal comfort. Physical activities like running, biking and practicing yoga become more enjoyable after surgery.
Feel More Comfortable Being Intimate
Embarrassment and discomfort with long or large labia can negatively impact a woman’s sex life, both physically and emotionally. Labiaplasty can increase a woman’s pleasure and confidence during intercourse and other intimate situations.
